Edgeware: insights from complexity science
for health care leaders by Brenda Zimmerman, Paul Plsek, Curt Lindberg Edgeware is one of the most useful books I have found. This book proves that complexity can be explained with clarity . Although it draws practical examples from the healthcare field, there can be no doubt that it applies to managers in all fields. If you start with this book as your introduction to complexity in organizations you will not go wrong. I keep going back to it! I was delighted to find that it has 5 star reviews from Kevin J Dooley and from Thomas Petzinger, Jr. two of my favourite authors in this field.

Human Dynamics: A New Framework for
Understanding People and Realizing the Potential in Our Organizations by Sandra Seagal, David Horne Segal and Horne provide a refreshing change from MBTI and other personality assessment techniques. Their approach based on extensive research looks at humans holistically and identifies types based on behaviour, language, and predominate approaches to problem solving. This is a beautifully crafted book which reflects the images and language of the various types as it describes them. The joy is in learning the whole approach, not just the type which best fits you. The Fifth Discipline by PETER M. SENGE This is the book which put the term "learning organization"
on the map- even though the term was coined by others. Many of the concepts
in this book have been adopted by leaders and organizations so there
may be a sense of charging at already toppled windmills when reading
the book, never the less it is a classic which is still well worth
reading. The section which introduces systems thinking is excellent! Another favourite of Strategenis is the Fifth Discipline FieldBook

Advances in Health Care Organization Theory by Stephen S. Mick (Editor), Mindy E. Wyttenbach (Editor) "The original essays in this book are written to help advance the field or organization theory, particularly in the area of health care..." Although the context for this book is healthcare, it has applicability beyond the healthcare field. The chapter on Health Organizations as Adaptive Systems is excellent. |
