Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order
by Steven Strogatz

Using complexity theory as a backdrop Strogatz explores  the phenomena of self-organization. Using mathematics and examples from the natural world such as brainwaves, and the synchronized  blinking of fireflies to illustrate  how synchronization  occurs. From cells to the cosmos , the book delves deeply into the mysteries of how the universe works and the conditions for self organization.  Strogatz  references Einstein, Richard Feynman,   Edward Lorenz and others as he set out his case.    The reader is left with an exhilarating sense of connectedness. It changes how you see the world.    ..

COMPLEXITY: THE EMERGING SCIENCE AT THE EDGE OF ORDER AND CHAOS
by Mitchell M. Waldrop

This book provides a  seductive introduction to complexity. Using the founding of the Santa Fe Institute as the setting for the book, Waldrop weaves the story of the beginnings of complexity science around the people who helped to explore the new territory. He takes you inside the thinking of  John Holland, Stuart Kauffman, Brian Arthur, Gell-Mann and George Cowan. and describes the challenges faced in gaining acceptance for new ideas.  By linking the story to people, Waldrop avoids getting  mired in mathematical  explanations. As a result is a book is accessible to the non- scientists among us and is a highly satisfying read. The book grabs you and takes you along on  journey of  discovery  into the fundamental nature of  life.  Along the way, the reader learns about the concepts of complexity , the deep questions which scientists are exploring.

Harnessing Complexity, Organizational Implications of a Scientific Frontier
by Robert Axelrod, Michael D. Cohen
This book provides a good primer on the terms used in the complexity field and a review of  some of the key strategies used in nature to improve fit and survivability.  It does not, not provide much in the way of tools for  the application of complexity concepts in organizations. Those looking  for a tookkit  will be disappointed,  those who are looking for an introduction to complexity and  and a generalized approach to  applying complexity to organizational issues  will be pleased.   My  experience  is that this book provides a quick reference to some key terms and concepts rather than an in depth study.

Complexity : Life at the Edge of Chaos
by Roger Lewin

This introduction to complexity science is  light on the science and heavy on the people who are pioneers in the field. Through his interviews with people, Lewin  introduces  key ideas in the field in a  way which provides a  introduction to complexity.  An interesting read for the non scientists among us. It's critics decry the lack of in depth science and hard definitions- by then that is why it has  appeal.

The Hidden Connections: a Science for Sustainable Living by Fritjof Capra

From the author of The Tao of Physics and The Turning Point ( which was made into the movie MindWalk.  This  book, in addition to an exploration of how complexity  relates to life, our mind, and society, has an excellent chapter on "Life and Leadership in Organizations".  I found myself making notes  every few lines as I read.  Capra, extends his examination of the implcations of complexity to global capitalism , bio technology and the cahllenges that face the world.
